Shagari urges Nigerians to pray for Peace

Apparently worried by the unnecessary heat being generated lately by politicians even as Nigerians prepare for yet another general election, Nigerian fourth republic president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, yesterday in Sokoto urged Nigerians to pray ceaselessly for peace and political stability in the country.

The elder statesman spoke when former head of state and 2015 All Progressive Congress (APC) presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, paid him an unexpected call in his residence, a day after returning from United Kingdom. He also stressed the need for peaceful co-existence. Shagari, who stressed that only prayers could bring about meaningful development in Nigeria, further thanked Nigerians for wishing him well as he marked his 90th birthday recently.

The wives of the former president requested to see Buhari for an audience and it was granted while Sokoto State governor, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, took the lead as Buhari congratulated them on their husband’s 90th birthday.

Speaking on the reasons for his visit, Gen Buhari said he decided to come and congratulate Nigeria’s former president for clocking 90 years. The retired General who tendered an apology for his inability to come with other Nigerian heads of state and leaders when they came, however, noted that he personally sent a letter to that effect. “I personally sent a letter to you informing you that I was in London and I hope the letter was deliver to you? I arrived yesterday from the United Kingdom and this morning, I proceeded here to felicitate with you on your 90th birthday. Buhari maintained that his coming was a simple felicitation.
